In a 16-word Western Union Telegram, Otto Praeger, second assistant postmaster general, wires Capt B. B. Lipsner in Chicago that the two pilots on the New York to Chicago path finder flights performed one hundred percent perfect on September 6, 1918. Praeger is referring to the potential arrival of Walter “Max” Miller flying the Standard JR-1B into Chicago. He landed at 6:55 to a thundering crowd of well-wishers. The next morning Edward V. “Turk” Gardner with mechanic Edward C. Radel flying in the two-seat Curtiss R4-1M biplane, arrived in Grant Park, Chicago at 8:17 a.m.
