Confederate handstamp paid with manuscript "5" (cent) rate on cover with Cobham, Virginia, circular date stamp, manuscript August 8 date, on an envelope addressed to Richmond, Virginia. The cover is docketed at left "28 July/1861" and is addressed to William Cabell Rives, who was at that time a member of the Confederate Congress. Rives had served in the United States Senate and House of Representatives. He had also served as Ambassador to France.
