Washington, George · 1775-1797
Buff wool breeches worn by George Washington. Breeches have a two-button closure at waist and a waistband which is lined with linen. The front flap has a one-button closure on either side. There are two front pockets, with a watch pocket on the proper right side of the waistband. The legs have a five-button closure, with a separate tab and button on leg openings. Although presented through the years as a uniform consisting of coat, waistcoat and breeches, the waistcoat and breeches are actually from an earlier uniform dating from the end of the Revolutionary War. The coat is slightly newer, dating from 1789.
