This is a good example of a hammered silver sixpence of Elizabeth I (1558-1603). In this instance, the coin is from the third/fourth issue (1561-77) and dated 1565. With the inner beaded circle being 17mm, the coin is on the smaller flan issue. The obverse has the portrait of the Queen facing left with a rose in the field behind the head and a rose mintmark. The reverse has the square-topped shield on long cross fourché, with the date above. There is a mintmark of a rose and there is a pellet and star at the end of the legend. The reverse has been double struck. The coin is struck slightly off centre with limited clipping; it is in otherwise fine condition
