MEDIEVAL SEAL MATRIX

A medieval seal matrix manufactured from cast copper alloy, c. AD 1200-1500. The matrix is circular with tool marks made by a file and an integrally cast loop on the back. The face has a portrait of a man within a central circle, surrounded by the inscription: S' STEPHI DE STRUBI. There are two Strubby's in Lincolnshire, one a hamlet in Langton by Wragby and the other a village north of Alford. Of these two, the latter is closest to where the object was found, and is recorded as a small village of 8 households in the Domesday book in 1086 with the same spelling (Strubi).
