POST MEDIEVAL SEAL MATRIX

Copper alloy and gemstone seal matrix. Cast hemispherical socket a thick rim for the matrix, and decorated with six lobes or petals separated by pellets rendered in relief. An apical loop is set centrally through which passes an ornate lobed loop with a separate grooved suspension loop for attachment to a fob brazed above it. The matrix is of a translucent lemon green stone, of diameter 15.4mm, appearing darkened by the reflection of the material of the handle, and portrays the profile portrait bust of Albert, Prince Consort to Queen Victoria (1819-1861), facing right [on the impression] with the legend in miniscule capitals below: ALBERT. Prince Albert was not especially popular in life, but became the subject of both prolonged Royal mourning and a vigorous cult of personality after his death.
