POST MEDIEVAL BODKIN

A complete silver post medieval bodkin. Slightly bent in several places. The bodkin has a rectangular longitudinal opening and a smaller circular apperture above that. It is rectangular in section. The bodkin is plain, with no etched or stamped decoration. There are several scratch marks on both sides of the bodkin, probably caused through use. There is a break at the top corner of the rectangular apperture.This lack of engraving or other diagnostic detail means that this bodkin is difficult to date accurately. However, it is similar in form to other bodkins that have been previoulsy dated to the 17th century and thus declared treasure. See 2004 T192 (Treasure Annual Report 2004, p123, no 251), 2010 T754 (LIN-A59A56) and 2009 T304 (SF-7B0BA7).As this bodkin is over 300 years old and over 10% precious metal, it has been reported as treasure under the 1996 Treasure Act.
