Medieval Gilt fragment, probably of a brooch, in the form of a wyvern. The head, the ends of the tail and probably of one leg are missing. There remains no evidence of a pin loop and there is no pin. The body of the creature is covered with very fine rectangular cross-hatched engraving, while the wings are depicted in counter relief. For probably similar brooches showing dragons and a human figure see Alexander and Binski 1987, 483, cat. no.641. Extant dimensions 22mm x 19mm. Thickness c.1mm. Late 12th – 13th century.
