Incomplete Roman copper alloy brooch, a Mackreth 2011, AESICA 2.b.1, with the spring, the pin, most of the rearhook, the outer parts of the wings, the edges of the central part, much of the fanbow, and part of the catchplate missing. An oblique groove is extant on one wing. The very short bow narrows to the top and is marked by a groove along both edges. Curiously, there is a single ring-and-dot near one side of the lower part of the bow. The central part, decorated with a series of four horizontal grooves and five sharp ribs and with very fine rocker-arm engraving, was probably ovoid "a conscious attempt to copy the look of a Rosette complete with rosette...." (ibid., 46). There are five radiating engraved lines on the fantail. Extant length and width 34.3 and 15mm. c.43 - c.70.
