MEDIEVAL BUCKLE

1230

The Portable Antiquities Scheme

Incomplete medieval copper buckle with annular frame, pin missing. The frame is divided in quarters, two plain and two cable pattern, the latter decorated with two lines of finely executed interrupted rocker-arm engraving giving the appearance of tiny addorsed triangles. The design is similar to a brooch from London whose frame is divided in halves, one cabled, one plain (Egan and Pritchard 1991, 249, fig. 160 no. 1310). The absence of a pin constriction shows that this is a buckle. External diameter 40mm. Internal diameter 35mm. Thickness 2.3mm. c.1230 - c.1400.
