A complete silver decorative mount, possibly for a book cover or box, of probable modern date, post 1750. The mount is made from sheet silver. It has an irregular shape in plan view, possibly representing two superimposed capital letters. Due to the highly stylized openwork design of the mount, it is uncertain if the design represents an 'H', 'E', 'I' or 'U' possibly referring to the owner's initials. The front of the mount is decorated with an engraved linear design. The design includes thicker, deeper lines, usually in groups of three, which follow the shape of the mount. The engraving also has shallower, diagonal strokes which provide texture. The reverse of the mount is plain. It is uncertain how the mount was attached. There is no evidence of attachment spikes or rivet holes and the irregular size and lack of wear to the openwork suggests it is only decorative. The mount is in good condition with no scratches or breaks. Length: 13.41mm. Width: 11.60mm. Thickness: 0.52mm. Weight: 0.4g.
