Engraving on paper of the Mocking of Christ, engraved and published by Jan Sadeler (1550-1600/1601) after a design Maarten de Vos (1532-1603) probably in Antwerp in 1582. Latin text below from Matthew 27. Seated in the Praetorium, Jesus is dressed him in a 'scarlet' robe, a crown of thorns is forced onto his head by two soldiers and a reed staff placed in his bound hands. One soldier kneeled before him, and according to the text chants, ‘Hail, king of the Jews.’ Similar sketches of the composition by Maarten de Vos in the British Museum (1946,0713.1045 and 1906,0723.15).
