Engraving on paper of the arms and costumes of Antwerp’s bourgeoisie (les armes et habitz des Bourgeois danners), from a series of Costumes of the various nations (Omnium pene Europae, Asiae, Aphricae atque Americae Gentium Habitus), engraved by Abraham de Bruyn (1538/40-1587) possibly in Cologne c. 1580. In the top row, three arquebusiers (infantryman) armed with swords and an arquebus or haakbus (hook gun) and three lancers or pikemen armed with lances and swords. In the bottom row, two musicians playing drum and flute and two banner carriers with a fur-lined shield and a rod with a small insignia and a large flag. The last figure is the lieutenant holding a lance decorated with a tassel. The men are all dressed in variations of the jerkins over doublet with puff sleeves, hose and various kinds of feathered hats.
