The Temptation of Christ in the desert

Engraving on paper of Jesus tested in the Wilderness from a series of the New Testament scenes, engraved and probably published by Jan Sadeler (1550-1600) after a design by Maarten de Vos (1532-1603) probably in Cologne in 1582. Latin text inscribed below refers to Matthew 4.4-11. After forty days of fasting, Jesus was led into the wilderness by a spirit to be tempted by the devil. The devil tested him three times. On the third attempt, he took Jesus to the highest mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world, saying, ‘all this I will give to you if you bow down and worship me’.
