Mezzotint portrait on paper of John Baker Holroyd (1735-1821), 1st Earl of Sheffield, engraved and published by John Raphael Smith (1751-1812) in London in 1777. It is a copy of a painting by Angelica Kauffman (1741-1807), now in the State A. Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow. The figure is dressed in a ‘Van Dyck’-style costume with plumed hat. At the time, seventeenth-century fashion was popular at fancy-dress parties and in portraiture. Holroyd leans against a sword between a draped column and an antique helmet and shield.
