J.B Newlands opened a studio in Calcutta in 1852 for daguerreotype studio at 6 London Buildings, Calcutta. He had a studio there between 1852-54. he was also based in Australia see links.

Three quarter length portrait of a seated woman, body facing slightly to her right, looking towards the camera. Her right arm rests on an ornate carved table, her hands are together holding a dark parasol or umbrella. On the table is an ornate ceramic jug containing (what looks like) a white rose. She wears a decorative lace-edged bonnet, tied at the chin with lappets hanging down, a dark dress, dark lace shawl, black lace gloves, lace cuffs or under-sleeves. A thin gold chain hangs around her neck and she wears a brooch at the front (gold highlights). She sits on a red-upholstered chair. Behind her is the base of a fluted column ans panelling. Almost full-length portrait of a child with straight blond hair, who sits on a low padded seat facing the camera. He wears a blue dress over a white shirt with a high collar. He has a gold chain wrapped twice around the neck. His hands are together in his lap. Legs are bare, with the edges of his socks visible. Hand coloured with gilt highlights.

Head and shoulders portrait of Charles Babbage, the mathematician, philosopher, inventor and mechanical engineer. He is best remembered for originating the concept of a programmable computer, the Difference Engine. He is clean-shaven with dark hair, wears a dark jacket, white shirt and dark cravat. The case opens along the shorter edge.
