J.B Newlands opened a studio in Calcutta in 1852 for daguerreotype studio at 6 London Buildings, Calcutta. He had a studio there between 1852-54. he was also based in Australia see links.

Portrait of a man, half length. He has a side parting and dark hair and wears white waistcoat and a dark jacket, and a white bow tie and a dark tie, both at the collar of his shirt. Top opening case.

Full length portrait of Ruffham Collett, one of Thomas Thurlow's workmen. Sitting on a saw horse cross-legged, he wears boots, trousers, waistcoat, shirt and neckerchief. He is clean shaven with a full head of hair. To his right on the saw horse is a plasterer's float and a pick axe. He holds a cigarette in his left hand and a trowel in his right hand. On his left there is a broom and a hod with his hat on the tip of the handle. Behind the saw horse appears to be a mirror with reflections in it. Wooden floor.

The case is decorated front and back, same design: embossed image of a bunch of flowers in the centre surrounded by a wavy strap, with linear strap and line edging.
