W.G.Helsby Retrastista Valparaiso and crest indicates this was made in Chile

Accompanied by a miniature on ivory painted by Henry Tilbury, and dated 1852, copied from the daguerreotype.

Half length portrait of a seated man, facing the camera, his body turned to his right. Against a painted backdrop of clouds. He wears a dark jacket, white shirt, dark cravat. His hair and sideburns are going grey. Hand coloured.

Lower half only of case, breaking apart and glass loose within it. Fragile. There is a complex design based on an oval on the reverse of the case, of which the leather is stained and worn.

A woman of mature years seen seated in three quarter view. The portrait is three quarter length and part of the chair back is visible. Her hands rest in her lap. Her hair is parted in the middle and she has ringlets emerging at the side of her lacy cap, which is tied under her chin. She wears a dark dress with lacy collar and cuffs. A balustrade is sited behind her and to her right.
