The mocking of Christ

Around 1508/09 Dürer designed the woodcut “The Mocking of Christ.” This scene, which was only integrated into his first “Kleine Passion” in 1511, shows Christ sitting in the center of a narrow room with his eyes connected. Five men surrounded him, mocking and humiliating him in different ways. While one of the henchmen tearing him by his hair, another blows his ear with a horn. In addition to the tormenting and mutually cheering evildoers, a man sits on the ground and eats his nightmare unimpressed by the events. The rich reception of woodcut is an expression of artistic appreciation.
