Dürer designed the woodcut “Die Kreuzer” in 1509 as part of his “Kleinen Passion” and tells in a fine part snapshot. After Pilate’s conviction, Christ must carry his cross to Golgotha, where the crucifixion is to be executed. The artist shows the moment when the Savior collapses under the burden of the cross. In addition to two traveling observers, various people who are actively intertwined with the events are strongly pressed. While armed soldiers accompany and forcibly advance the suffering and men transport the necessary utensils for the crucifixion, the faces of Mary and John can also be discovered on the train. Compassionate towards each other, they follow Christ. Simon of Kyrene grabs the trunk of the cross, Veronika sinks his knees to wipe his sweat with a cloth. The rich reception of narrative woodcut can be understood as an expression of artistic appreciation.
