Christ on the Cross

The woodcut shows the crucified man and the two mourners almost completely entering the leaf, whereby the cross forms both the central axis and the upper end. The muscular, yet lifeless body of the sun and moon as well as Mary and John is flanked. In his Dürer publication of 1827, Heller, like Nagler, lists the paper under the heading “Doubtful Leaves.” Both provide an indication that the old deductions are signed “Gedrucken bey Hans Guldenmund” (Heller Dürer 1827 II.753.1974 and Nagler 1837, p. 139) and list a copy.
