St Michael and the Devil from a Book of Hours (use of Rouen)

Master of the Echevinage de Rouen, attributed to

Parchment folio from a Book of Hours written and illuminated between 1485 and 1490 in the Rouen workshop of the Master of the Echevinage, in collaboration with artist workshops in Tours. This illumination is attributed to the Master of the Echevinage. In a landscape, the armoured Archangel Michael fights two demons. One, trapped beneath his feet, attempts to bite the archangel's leg through his armour, the other clings to Michael's shield. No text is written on the golden framed, which is decorated with scrolling acanthus leaves, and therefore the opening words 'MICHAEL ARCHANGELE VENI' are missing from the following prayer. The text on the verso includes prayers to the Archangel Michael and the rubric, 'De monseigneur st michiel larchangel.'
