Rome, Island of the Tiber

Half length portrait of an artwork of an elderly woman, seated on a red-upholstered chair (possibly a daguerreotype of an over-painted photograph). She wears a dark dress with a white lace collar, and a lace-edged cap tied on the right side of her chin. She holds a pink rosebud in her right hand. A rectangular table to her left is covered with a dark cloth; a small vase with flowers is on this. The case contains two portraits of a man and wife, see also No number 32_1.

Pass partout mounted daguerreotype. Head and shoulders portrait of a middle aged man facing the viewer's right. The man wears a button jacket, white shirt with high collar and a black bow tie. He has a side parting and side burns. Plain background.

Lower half only of case, breaking apart and glass loose within it. Fragile. There is a complex design based on an oval on the reverse of the case, of which the leather is stained and worn.

Accompanied by a miniature on ivory painted by Henry Tilbury, and dated 1852, copied from the daguerreotype.
