The case is in the form of a book, with a clasp mechanism. The 'spine of the book is stamped in gold 'SOUVENI' the R is not fully visible.

Full length portrait of two boys, standing, in uniform. They wear a similar tunics (a fine check) with sleeves gathered at the cuffs, white collars with a dark bow tie at the collar, dark belts with metal buckles, dark trousers and shoes, and dark caps with lacquered visors. There may be a support behind the boy on the left. Each has a slender cane upright in front of him. In the foreground a dog is sitting, black and shaggy with a white bib. Behind is a white textile, like a sheet. The floor is patterned.

Lower half only of case, breaking apart and glass loose within it. Fragile. There is a complex design based on an oval on the reverse of the case, of which the leather is stained and worn.
