T Wharton case maker registered his ‘Design for a Miniature picture frame back’ with the certificate of registration on 23rd August 1841. This object is dated June 3rd , 1851 but on the backing the metal is embossed with 4 August 1841.

Three quarter length portrait of a woman in mourning costume, standing, facing the camera. Her right elbow is poised on a pile of two books, which rest on a cloth-covered table which has another book on it. She holds her right index finger to her chin, and her left hand holds a lace cloth. Her third finger wears a mourning ring. She wears a dark silk dress with a brooch at the front, low on the shoulders with a fine lace edging. Her hair is very dark and coils to cover her ears. A long chain around her neck to her waist. The table is covered with a cloth. She stands in front of a painted backdrop, a view with lake, trees and hills. Hand coloured.

Three quarter length portrait of a seated man, legs crossed, facing slightly to his right. His left arm rests on an ornate carved table, his right hand is in his lap, holding something dark (a pair of gloves?). Part of a top hat is also visible on the table. He has receding hair, sideburns and possibly a chin beard. He wears a dark jacket, trousers and waistcoat, white shirt and dark cravat. A gold watch chain (gold highlights) is on his waistcoat. Pince-nez hang from a cord around his neck. A ring is on the little finger of his left hand. The background may be real or painted: a fluted column with drapery over the base of this and panelling to the left. Hand coloured, gold highlights.

Stamped the cover of the case: Mr KILBURN BY APPOINTMENT 234 REGENT STREET with two coats of arms between the lettering. It is the royal warrant and photographer's name, 'Mr Kilburn, 234 Regent Street', stamped in gold on front. Kilburn' studio was based at 234 Regent street 234 Regent Street in Westminster between 1845 - July 1855.
