Parchment folio from a Gospel book written and illuminated c. 1536 in the Suynik' province of Armenia for Esayi the 'great vardapet' (abbot). St Mark sits at a desk before a fish-shaped lectern, contemplating his writing. The hand of God appears from the upper right corner. The folio is blank on the recto. The portrait would have faced the opening page of the Gospel of Mark.
