Fredrik I, Fredrik of Hessen, born 1676, died 25 March 1751, king of Sweden from 1720, rural Count of Hessen-Kassel Fredrik was successful Field Lord in the Spanish War of the Succession on the Allies' side to France. He became a widow without a child in 1705, released to Sweden’s heir to the throne Ulrika Eleonora and married her in 1715. She became queen after Karl XII’s death, but abdicated to her husband in 1720, who found herself well in the role of constitutional monarch during the period of freedom.
