The most noble John Manners, Marquis of Granby

Hand-coloured mezzotint portrait on paper of John Manners (1721-1770), Marquis of Granby, engraved by Richard Purcell (c. 1746-c. 1768) and published by Henry Overton II (fl. 1751-1764) in London after 1759. It is a copy of a painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792), which sold in a 2005 Sotheby’s sale of Important British Paintings. The print's colouring closely matches the original painting. During the Seven Years War, Manners was Colonel of the Royal House Guards (1758-1770), was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the forces in Germany and Lieutenant-General of the Ordnance in 1759, and was made Master-General of the Ordnance in 1763. He later served as Commander-in-Chief of the Forces from 1766 until 1769. The large number of Marquis of Granby pubs and inns in the UK is said to be a reflection of his popularity among his troops.
