The Rt Honble John Earl of Egmont, Viscount Perceval of Kanturk

Mezzotint portrait on paper of John Perceval (1711-1770), 2nd Earl of Egmont, engraved by James McArdell (1729-1765) in London c. 1764; print before publication details added. It is a copy of a painting by Thomas Hudson (1701-1779) dated to c.1759, now in the National Portrait Gallery, London (NPG 2481). This was a companion piece to a portrait Hudson painted (and McArdell copied in mezzotint) of Perceval’s second wife, Catherine Perceval (née Compton), Countess of Egmont and their eldest son, Charles George Perceval, 2nd Baron Arden. Perceval succeeded his father to the Irish peerage in 1748, and his robes reflect this standing. In 1762 he was created Baron Lovel and Holland in the Peerage of Great Britain, and the following year was appointed First Lord of the Admiralty, a position he held until 1766. The inscription below, which includes all his titles, is written either side of his coat of arms which incorporates the Perceval motto: sub cruce candida (under the white cross).
