Expulsion from Paradise

The artist copied Dürer’s 1510 design woodcut “Die VerDer aus dem Paradies,” part of his “Kleinen Passion,” from the original page. Although he transferred it to the technique of copper engraving, the orientation on the template is clearly visible. After the fall of sin, a cherubim rushes down, pointing the first pair of people with their sword raised and a repellent gesture from paradise. In the central axis, the Tree of Knowledge rises into the sky and marks the Garden of Eden as a place of action for the viewer. While Adam turns his face to the cherubim, the hasty Eve kicks his foot. There is no evidence of Dürer as the spiritual creator of the image idea, but the empty paneled - sign Marcantonio Raimondis - is integrated into the representation on the top right. Bartsch mentions three states of Raimondi’s sequence of passage after Dürer (cf. Bartsch XIV.401).
