The artist copied Martin Schongauer’s engraving “Saint Anthony, tormented by demons” from the opposite side. Although he translated it into the technique of etching and expanded the rocky landscape on the lower edge of the leaf to include a house with staff, the orientation on the template is clearly visible. Saint Anthony, with a long beard, hovers in the center of the leaf. From all sides he is attacked by monster creatures with claws and percussion tools. Since the copy contains not only a monogram pannel with the mirrored year “1530,” but also the Dürer monogram was inserted, Heller included the work under the heading “Leaves bearing irrig Dürer’s signs” in his 1827 published Dürer publication. (Cf. Heller Dürer 1827 II.92551)
