The effigy of Philipp Melanchthon follows Dürer’s in 1526, although it shrinks the scholar and shows it from the opposite side. The artist translated it into the technique of etching and integrated it into an oval frame. Below, a board shows the name of the depicted. The image section and the structure suggest that the image printed in 1805 in a chronicle of Brett (cf. JH.Top.o.58 of the State Library Bamberg, formerly the library Joseph Heller) is not a direct part of Dürer’s engraving, but rather a frontispiece designed by Christian Gottlieb Geyser, which in turn is published for 1777. Neither is an indication of the intellectual creator of the image idea nor of the actual artist and the time of creation integrated.
