Giambologna may have made this small self-portrait in 1599, when the pope knighted him in the Order of Christ. The insignia, a Greek cross, is displayed on his chest. This bust’s modest dimensions make it perfectly suited for a cabinet of curiosities; it could be held by hand and studiously admired from all sides.
