After he settled in Nuremberg, Van der Schardt, originally from the Low Countries, concentrated on making lifelike painted portrait busts and reliefs of wealthy citizens. Portrayed here is Johann Neudörfer the Younger, the municipal calligrapher and mathematician. He belonged to the city’s cultural elite.
