Haarniska. Metallinen lamellipanssari (a) ja erillinen nahkainen suojakilpi (b). a) Panssari koostuu seitsemästä rivistä ohuita rautaisia levyjä eli lamelleja, jotka on kiinnitetty toisiinsa limittäin nahkaremmeillä. Kilven alareunassa on rei’itys nahkanauhoille, joista kilpi sidotaan kiinni panssarin yläosaan. Armor. A metallic lamellar suit of armor (a) with separate protective shield of leather (b). a) The suit of armor is composed of seven rows of thin iron plates or lamellae laced with leather thongs and overlapping each other. The rows of lamellae are laced slightly overlapping so as to form a suit that is also flexible vertically. One row has 32–36 lamellae so that the sides of the armor are uneven. There are all together 240 lamellae in the armor of which this metallic part protects the warrior from the abdomen down to below his knees. Two pieces of thick skin are attached to the upper row of lamellae to protect the chest area with a higher piece on the right hand side. Two baleen toggles are fixed to the right hand piece of skin for tying to loops on the separate shield. The armor is put on with help of a leather strap around the neck, but now this strap is missing and has been replaced, perhaps at the museum, with a length of iron wire. There are leather straps at the side of the body suit for tying it on the right side. b) The separate protective shield is made of a thin wooden sheet covered with reindeer skin on the outer side and stiff hide on the inside. The shield has a main panel which protects the back and a side wing made of several parts so it can be folded to protect the left side of the head and neck. The shield is provided with leather loops for both the shoulders and wrists. There are holes at the lower edge where the shield can be tied with leather straps onto the iron body suit. The outer surface of the shield is covered with designs painted in red ochre and perhaps with blood. The designs depict scenes of fights between warriors. The iron plates are quite rusted. There are small tears and holes in the shield that have been fixed. The shield seems to have had a second wing on the right-hand side that is now missing. Pälsi acquired the armor with a helmet (VK4991:21) and a quiver with arrows (VK4991:22) from the Reindeer Chukchi camping at the lower Anadyr River during the summer 1917. According to Pälsi, the Chukchi informed him that the outfit was taken by their ancestors as a trophy from the former inhabitants of the Kamtchatka “during the time when they had their own language and where known as the Itelmen nation” and where fighting with the Koryak and the Chukchi as well as Russian invaders (Pälsi, 1920). It appears that the iron helmet and body suit would be originally from Russian, Yakut or other such origin dating latest to early 18th century and remodeled for Chukchi use; the set-up somewhat resembles the function of the leather hoop armor made by the Chukchi. The shield and quiver were probably made by the Chukchi themselves and added to the outfit later on. The protective shield is unique in the richness of its painted designs, which seem to depict fights between the Chukchi and the Koryak and perhaps the Cossacks.
