Handscroll painting, 'True loves reunited in pictures' (Huizhen quan tu), painted by Yu Zhiding in ink and colours on paper in China in the late 17th century. This dramatic tale, written by Wang Shifu (1250-1337?) and known also by the title 'Romance of the Western Chamber' (Xixiang ji), is based on the famous Tang-dynasty love story 'Tale of Oriole' (Yingying zhuan) but is retold with a happy ending. Comprised of twenty individual scenes, the painting depicts episodes of the love story between Oriole, the beautiful daughter of a statesman, and the talented but impoverished scholar, Zhang.
