Mud cloth

This mud cloth is made for the tourist market and is an image from daily life. The cloth is painted in a family context. The weaving of the bands for the cloth may have been made elsewhere. The weaving width is 15 cm. The threads of the weave are Z-spun, the weave is 15 threads in the warp and 9 threads in the weft and are beige in colour. The stitching threads are S,2z spun by machine and double used (see M6-52). The image is a painting of the view of the mosque at Djenné, with the market in the foreground. Mommersteeg says it is a reasonably accurate rendering, because the hut against the wall is also there in reality. The border decoration on the upper and lower strip is reminiscent of traditional bogolan figures. There are decorations only in the top left and right corners.‖ This cloth depicts an image from everyday life. It is made for wall decoration.
