Church from Shurdești (1974)

The Greek Catholic Church dedicated to the “Holy Archangels,” one of the highest wooden churches in Europe (72 m) was built in 1766 by the craftsman Ion Macarie. The building is rectangular, with the apse of the polygonal altar. The roof has two rows of streets surrounding the church, and the unitary roof also covers the altar. Between the two streets is a row of windows. The oak beams of the walls were placed on a stone foundation. The interior painting dates from 1783: the altar was painted by the painter Stephen, the nave by the painter Stan, and the narthex probably by an apprentice of the latter. The particular note is given by the four small towers around the central tower and the porch with two rows of overlapping arches, with different openings, identical in shape and decoration. The church is included from 1999 in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List and is on the list of historical monuments under the code LMI MM-II-a-A-04769.
