Unknown artist
The artist erased a portrait of Barbara Schedel (1492-1528) after a painting dating back to 1524 and bearing the Dürer monogram, which makes Dürer’s research puzzle to this day. The breast image of the young woman with a hat is presented in the three-quarter profile. Her gaze slides into the distance, lost in memory. Below, an inscription identifying the depicted closes the etching. (Cf. Panzer 1790, p. 211) Also, references to the template as well as the actual artist are integrated into the representation. Heller included the sheet under the heading “Hnach Dürer’s paintings and drawings made leaves” in his 1827 publication Dürer. (Cf. Heller Dürer 1827 II.914,2515)
