Ladmiral made a view of three portraits of artists as an illustration of the second volume of the 1764 edition of Carel van Manders “Het leven der doorluchtige Nederlandsche en eenige hoogduitsche schilders,” including a portrait of Albrecht Dürer d.Ä. (1427-1502), according to popular templates. He shows the portraits arranged in a cramped interior on a table. On the lying drawing, which nestles against the edge of the table and the paintings lying vertically behind it, there is a burning candle. The Portrait of Dürer d.Ä. Based on a painting his son had painted by his 70-year-old father, of which several imitations exist today. Heller included the etching under the heading “After Dürer’s paintings and drawings made leaves” in his 1827 published Dürer publication. (Cf. Heller Dürer 1827 II.901,2489)
