Angelika Kauffmann met the anti-researcher and librarian Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717-1768) in 1763 and portrayed him in 1764. At that time he had already been known by his research beyond the borders of Italy and became the most important theorist of classicism with his “History of the Art of Antiquity.” Kauffmann’s hip portrait of Winckelmann with a feather keel in his hand while drawing was extremely appreciated because of his liveliness and composition.
