A doll from the beginning of the 20th century from Adam Szrajer's Factory of Dolls and Toys in Kalisz. The factory was founded in 1884 by Jakub Fingerhut, the future father-in-law of Adam Szrajer (1873-1934). Initially, the Kalisz factory produced dolls with bisque heads and wooden bodies on ball joints. Kalisz was under Russian partition at that time, therefore products from by that time are often treated as Russian.During World War I, the factory was destroyed and its founder died. After the war, the Szrajers managed to rebuild it. They introduced celluloid, a modern and cheap, for those times, material. The dolls made there were characterized by a beautiful, intense face painting. Dolls called "Shirleys", with blonde hair, imitating the popular child actress Shirley Temple, and dolls called "Krakowians" due to their characteristic beauty and make-up, were especially popular. After World War II, the Szrajer’s factory was taken over by Kaliskie Zakłady Przemysłu Terenowego and its owners emigrated to America. Celluloid dolls were produced until 1965.The doll is in the collection of the Museum of Toys and Fairy Tales in Toruń https://www.muzeumzabawekibajek.pl/The Museum of Toys and Fairy Tales at 12 Ducha Święty in the Old Town in Toruń was established in 2013 by Katarzyna Wesołowska-Karasiewicz and her husband. The collection consists of about 1,000 exhibits from the mid-nineteenth century to the twentieth century. The exhibits include, among others: pre-war dolls, Java theater puppets, original women's clothes from the January Uprising, electric trains and pre-war stone toy blocks.
