Weather watcher--This 100-ton buoy, now stationed 125 miles east of the Virginia Coast, makes it possible to plot storms beyond detection of shore-based facilities. The automated weather station, designed and equipped by the Convair division of General Dynamics, San Diego, Calif., is one of the first steps in the development of a national network of ocean data stations under the Coast Guard-managed National Data Buoy Development Project. The buoy gathers and stores data on air and water temperatures, barometric pressure, winds, dew point, solar radiation, precipitation, waves and surface water currents. The information is transmitted to shore stations, analyzed and relayed to the U.S. Weather Bureau.
