World's Largest Diamond is Cut Successfully - The 726 carat gem - known as the Jonker diamond - which was yesterday the world's largest and finest diamond., is being exhibited here by Miss Gladys Hannaford. The famous diamond, cleaved into three pieces yesterday by Lazare Kaplan, New York diamond-cutter, is shown here in the center of the tray surrounded by a model of a necklace which the owner hopes to see sold for $2,000,000. So delicate is, the operation of cleaving a diamond that it has been attempted, once before on a large gem. Though the actual cleaving took but a few seconds, Kaplan had been studying the great gem's grain for months in preparation for yesterday's feat. Though even the owner, Harry Winston, didn't care to watch, the stone fell apart perfectly.
