A 'cit,' ugly and elderly, sits full face at r. angles to the fire (r.). He has been suddenly awakened by two squalling cats behind him (l.) and registers surprise and terror, with staring eyes and gaping, distorted mouth. Both hands are raised, and he has flung back the bandanna which covered his face. The room suggests prosperity: carved marble chimney-piece surmounted by mirror or picture, carpet, hearth-rug, low-backed arm-chair of modern shape (BM).
