Where Gold Brought Big Boom - A typical California boomtown of 1848 is shown (1) in an old lithograph of the city of Columbia, close to where James Wilson Marshall discovered gold at Sutter's Mill 100 years ago. Typical gold miners of those days are shown (2) complete with whiskers, pans and cradle, panning for gold in the American river. At right (3), California historians unearth the remains of the tailrace at Sutter's Mill, where Marshall made his discovery on Jan. 24, 1848, and touched off the big Gold Rush.
