Veteran Skipper Joins Son on Columbia. Cornelius Shields, Sr., 67-year-old veteran of many yachting victories as he joined his son Cornelius “Glit” Jr. in cockpit of America’s Cup sloop Columbia today. Columbia beat Nefertiti by over five minutes today as final cup trials began. The senior Shields has been sidelined by a heart condition but decided to sail again as an advisor to his skipper son rather than watch impatiently as a spectator.
