Watkins, Carleton E., 1829-1916 · 1865–1866
From catalogue raisonné: This feature [the mountain in the background] was first named Mount Broderick by Josiah Whitney and his California State Geological Survey associates in honor of U.S. senator David C. Broderick (1820-1859) and was known as such by Watkins. An 1871 map listed it as "Mt. Broderick or Cap of Liberty." By 1878 Broderick's name had been removed and reassigned to a nearby, less dramatic peak.
