Witchcraft blamed for slaying

Joe S. Chavez (above right), 43-year-old Guadalupe, Ariz., rancher, on trial here today for murder, testified he shot Mrs. Carmen Miranda because she was a witch. He said Mrs. Miranda had placed a hex on his wife, Josephine (left) and caused her to go blind.
