Weighing the Wealth. Since 1924, the New York Federal Reserve Bank has acted as a warehouse for foreign gold storing in 121 separate and barred compartments the gold of some 70 foreign accounts. Stacked in bars weighing 27-28 pounds each and worth approximately $14,000, the gold is available to settle national debts or for shipment to the owner country upon request. While two officials weigh gold bars in the vaulted storage area of the Federal Reserve Bank, New York City, a stacker stands by to lift them onto a truck.
